A ranch-style home with a deep covered porch, a slope falling away from the house, and an owner who described the garden entirely in terms of evenings.

That is a useful brief. It decides the planting, the surfaces and the lighting in one go.

What we did

The fall from the porch was held with a low dry-stacked limestone wall, which gave a flat lawn terrace at the top and a planted bank below it. Turf runs right up to the stone and to the path, so the geometry reads even when the light has gone flat.

Planting was kept low and textural along the wall line, with the mature canopy left to do the heavy work overhead.

Detail

Lighting was set into the wall and the beds rather than mounted on the house, so at dusk the garden lights from within itself and the stone edges are the last thing still legible.
